Heroes in September

5 September 2008

No, not THAT one. The Heroes in question here is a 1977 movie directed by Jeremy Paul Kagan (The Big Fix, Courage, Conspiracy: The Trial of the Chicago 8) and co-starring two-time Oscar winner Sally Field (Places In The Heart, Norma Rae) and a post-Star Wars, on-the-cusp-of-superstardom Harrison Ford, Heroes marked the first leading feature film role of Henry Winkler (Holes; The Waterboy; Scream) following his huge success starring as The Fonz in TV's Happy Days.

A quirky, road movie-cum-romantic comedy with a message, Heroes was one of the first major Hollywood films ever to deal with the problems facing Vietnam veterans and the condition of post-traumatic stress syndrome, and proved to be the perfect vehicle for Winkler to show there was more to him as an actor than playing a cool, 1950s biker on a TV show.

Winkler stars as Jack Dunne, a traumatised former Vietnam marine who escapes the psychiatric ward at New York's Veterans' Hospital and heads across country towards Eureka, California, where he intends to start a worm farm funded by his fellow inmates. Along the way he hopes to hook up with a couple of war buddies who have agreed to help him set up the business, but boarding the bus in New York he meets soon-to-be-married Carol Bell (Field), a young woman who unknowingly is about to begin her own journey of self-discovery. Jack convinces Carol to join him on his odyssey and they eventually meet up with Jack's friend, the slightly deranged Ken Boyd (Ford), whose one-time commitment to the worm farm plan has been derailed by drink, a passion for his car and a life of doing nothing on his grandparents' farm. Continuing their journey without Ken, Jack and Carol eventually make an unexpected discovery that changes their lives in the most profound way.

Scripted by real-life Vietnam veteran Jim Carabatsos (who later wrote Heartbreak Ridge and Hamburger Hill), and culminating in a harrowing depiction of the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder and an ending that will move many viewers to heartfelt tears, Heroes is a moving, life-affirming story of two people who manage to find themselves through each other.

Heroes (cert. 15) will be released on UK DVD by Fremantle Home Entertainment on 15th September 2008 at the RRP of just £7.99. No extras have been listed.
