He Ran All the Way in May

2 April 2009

A payroll heist goes badly wrong and, with his partner badly wounded, cop killer Nick Robey (John Garfield – Body and Soul, The Postman Always Rings Twice) finds himself alone and on the run. Fleeing, he meets a plain young woman name Peggy (Shelley Winters) and charms his way into her home. Feeling the net tighten, Nick holds Peggy hostage along with her parents and brother. Desperate hours pass as Nick grows ever more volatile and Peggy attempts to sacrifice herself for the sake of her family.

Garfield, in his last film role before his death, gives a chilling performance as the paranoid Nick, less a cold-blooded killer than a man hardened by a lifetime of rejection. Written by the Oscar-winning writer Dalton Trumbo (Roman Holiday, The Brave One), one of the Hollywood 10 who were blacklisted by the industry and kicked out of the Screenwriters' Guild following the McCarthy era Communist witch-hunts.
