Black Snow (Ben ming nian) on DVD in March

22 February 2010

Winner of the Silver Bear in Berlin in 1990, Xie Fei's Black Snow (Ben ming nian) is a politically daring tale of urban alienation and despair which tells of former prisoner Li Huiquan (Jiang Wen) who arrives back in his native Beijing, to find he has no home to return to. With no family, friends and few job prospects his underworld contacts try to drag him back in...

Taking the classic crime thriller hook – former con struggling to go straight – Black Snow emerges as a powerful study of displacement, of the fear felt by many Chinese that perhaps there would be no place for them in the new, just-emerging China and takes place at the juncture of the earth-shattering 1989 student rebellion.

Black Snow will be released on UK DVD on 8th March 2010 by Second Run at the RRP of £12.99. Presented in a new, high definition transfer approved by its director and new and improved subtitle translations, the disc will also include a 32 minite interview with director Xie Fei and a booklet featuring an essay by Professor Shaoyi Sun.
