Jane Eyre on DVD in May

11 March 2010

After a long wait and plenty of requests from eager film fans, Robert Stevenson's 1944 classic adaptation of Charlotte Bronte's great novel Jane Eyre finally makes its UK DVD debut on 3 May 2010. This Hollywood classic is being released in a brand new restored version courtesy of Second Sight.

The film features a magnificent performance from the inimitable Orson Welles alongside screen legend Joan Fontaine as the heroine Jane, and a brief appearance from a young Elizabeth Taylor.

The setting is the Yorkshire Moors, where the young Jane Eyre, a poor orphan with a tough upbringing arrives to take up the post of governess at Thornfield Hall under the charge of the brooding, arrogant Edward Rochester (Welles). Starved of love throughout her life, Jane is drawn to her enigmatic, if somewhat volatile boss and romance ensues. Having at last found the happiness she so longed for Jane's future looks bright but a dark secret lurks that threatens to spoil her happy ending.

With outstanding acting, atmospheric visuals and a wonderful score from the great Bernard Herrmann, Jane Eyre is one of the unforgettable classics of Hollywood's Golden Age.

Jane Eyre will be released on UK DVD on 3rd May 2010 by Second Sight at the RRP of £15.99. No extras have been listed.

UPDATE: The release has been cancelled, at least for the foreseeable future.
