The Man from Mo’Wax on 3-disc Dual Format in September

22 August 2018

James Lavelle played his first DJ set at 14, launched pioneering record label Mo’Wax at 18 and made the genre-defining UNKLE album Psyence Fiction at 22. His phenomenally rapid rise seemed limitless, but it’s only when you’re going so fast that the wheels fall off. Now, 20 years after the release of Psyence Fiction, The Man from Mo’Wax tells the incredible story of one of the most enigmatic yet influential figures in contemporary British culture.

An entertaining and insightful look at the ups and downs of the music business, The Man from Mo’Wax is a must for anyone who enjoys music documentaries, whatever their musical taste. For Mo’Wax fans, this package is the ultimate collector’s item.

Following its UK-wide cinema release via Trafalgar Releasing and ourscreen on 31 August 2018, the film will be released on Blu-ray/DVD by the BFI on 10 September 2018 in a numbered, Limited Edition (3,000 units) 3-disc set (1 x Blu-ray and 2 x DVD) with stunning bespoke packaging that contains a 48-page book featuring rare photos and artwork by Futura, 3D and others, director and producer notes and a foreword by James Lavelle. A massive six hours of extras feature extended interviews with James Lavelle and DJ Shadow, two audio commentaries and much more. The retail price is £29.99.

A 2-disc DVD ‘Psy-Fi Edition’ (titled in recognition of the 20th anniversary of UNKLE’s seminal album) will be available exclusively from HMV in-store and online, also on 10 September. The film’s soundtrack will be released by Island Records/UMC on 2LP coloured vinyl and CD and will be available for download and streaming on 31 August.

Unearthed from over 700 hours of footage including exclusive personal archive material spanning three decades, here’s the rare opportunity to watch a boy become a man in the world of music. The result is an exhilarating, no holds-barred ride into the life of an extraordinary man and an equally extraordinary era. Taking in some decidedly flawed decision-making (both personal and professional), Lavelle emerges as an innovative artist who thinks big and consistently overcomes adversity.

The Man from Mo’Wax, which was made with the support by the BFI using funds from the National Lottery, also stars collaborators DJ Shadow, Joshua Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), Ian Brown, Thom Yorke, Badly Drawn Boy, graphic artist Futura, Grandmaster Flash and 3D from Massive Attack.

The Man from Mo’Wax is being launched with a Sonic Cinema screening at BFI Southbank on Thursday 30 August at 8.30pm. James Lavelle and the filmmakers will take part in a Q&A afterwards. The event will also feature a Pitchblack Playback of an exclusive mix from UNKLE’s new forthcoming album and an after-party with a live DJ set from Lavelle. The Q&A will also be broadcast via Facebook Live from the BFI. More details on the BFI website: https://whatson.bfi.org.uk/Online/manfrommowaxplusqanda
