RICH AND FAMOUS [GONG WOO CHING] & TRAGIC HERO [YING HUNG HO HON] (1987)
Blu-ray | 24 July 2023 | £28.99

A two-film saga influenced by The Godfather and Once Upon a Time in America, Taylor Wong's  Rich and Famous and Tragic Hero tell a decades-spanning tale of brotherhood and betrayal with a heroic bloodshed twist.

In Rich and Famous, in order to pay off a gambling debt two brothers Yung (Alex Man) and Kwok (Andy Lau) enter a dangerous world of violent criminals. Crossing paths with the charismatic gangster Li Ah Chai (Chow Yun Fat), the two brothers join his gang and quickly rise through the ranks. Then in the spectacularly action-packed Tragic Hero, the fortunes of all three characters has changed significantly, with one of the brothers now a violent Triad leader seeking revenge.

Also starring Danny Lee (who would reunite with Chow Yun Fat two years later for John Woo's The Killer), Rich and Famous and Tragic Hero make their Blu-ray debuts in the UK from new restorations.

July also sees the re-scheduled release of Andrzej Żuławski: Three Films. The reason for the change in release schedule was outlined by Eureka in its press release today:

Whilst moving into the final stages of production before disc authoring, new video extras were submitted to Andrzej Jaroszewicz for his approval (Jaroszewicz worked as cinematographer on several Żuławski's films and was a camera operator on The Devil). Upon reviewing footage from The Devil, Jaroszewicz expressed some concerns. The Devil was originally restored back in 2015 but was rejected by Żuławski as the colour grading was incorrectly applied. After Żuławski died in 2016, Daniel Bird made great efforts to have the film graded correctly, and Andrzej Jaroszewicz was brought in to oversee this new grading, which was completed that year. So, upon reviewing our extras, Jaroszewicz was surprised to see footage from The Devil that used the older incorrect grading. After contacting the licensor, it seems that at some point in the past 7 years the version of the film approved by Jaroszewicz has gone missing and the older version is all that is on file. After assessing the situation and raising the issue with the Polish Society of Cinematographers, the only solution was to go back to the original materials and re-do the grading, with Jaroszewicz again overseeing the project. As such, it will not be possible to make the originally planned release date. The rescheduled release date will now be 31 July 2023. The three films from the uncompromising visionary and a true maverick of European cinema will now be presented as a 3-Disc set rather than the previously announced 2-Disc set.

Andrzej Żuławski: Three Films Blu-ray pack shot

ANDREJ ŻULAWSKI: THREE FILMS | Blu-ray Limited Edition Box Set | 31 July 2023 | £42.99

An uncompromising visionary and a true maverick of European cinema, the Masters of Cinema Series presents three films by Andrzej Żuławski, all making their UK debuts on Blu-ray from new 4K restorations.

Rich with multilayered symbolism and apocalyptic imagery, The Third Part of the Night [Trzecia czesc nocy] (1971) is Żuławski's highly influential debut feature film. After his whole family is slaughtered during the Nazi-occupation of Poland, Michal (Leszek Teleszyński) decides to join the resistance but descends into madness after encountering a doppelgänger of his murdered wife.

The Devil [Diabel] (1972) is a violent tale of Satanic seduction during the Prussian invasion of Poland in the 17th century, which proved so controversial upon release that it was banned for 16 years.

And finally, On the Silver Globe [Na srebrnym globie] (1988), Żuławski's masterpiece about a team of astronauts who land on a desolate planet and start a new society. When filming was 80% complete, the Polish government ordered the production to be shut down and all the negatives be destroyed. Miraculously, the original film reels were preserved and ten years later the film was presented at the Cannes Film Festival to great acclaim.
